Brain break: Rearrange the letters in the word FUNDER to make a new word impacting Colorado taxpayers and nonprofits…give up yet? If you guessed REFUND, you are correct! The Refund CO Initiative is a great opportunity for your nonprofit to receive additional donations.

Filing your taxes has just made donating to causes you love even easier! There is an exciting new opportunity for Colorado taxpayers to support their communities through the Refund CO initiative, which enables taxpayers to donate to local nonprofits directly from their state refund.

 Colorado Nonprofit Association (CNA) spearheaded the law behind Refund CO, which stands to benefit more than 7,000 eligible nonprofits registered with the state. As a proud member of CNA, we at Nonprofit Navigators are so thankful for their advocacy and look forward to helping the nonprofit community take advantage of this opportunity.

 Is my nonprofit eligible?

Your organization is automatically eligible if you check all the following:

• You are a 501(c)(3) organization

• You have been registered in accordance with the Colorado Charitable Solicitations Act (CCSA) for at least five years

• You are considered in good standing with the CCSA as of September 1, 2023

I am eligible! Now what?

Now is the best time to promote Refund CO to as many of your supporters as possible. Just follow these three simple steps:

1.     Spread the word

With W-2s rolling in at the beginning of the year, so can donations! Take to social media and the wider community to make sure everyone knows about Refund CO. Just add your information to this template, and start sharing!

2.     Educate your potential donors

Make sure your potential donors know all the information they will need about you to donate while filing their taxes. This will include:

• Your nonprofit’s name

• Your nonprofit’s CCSA registration number (not the EIN) 

3.     Repeat!

Continue to spread the word and educate your potential donors throughout tax season.

Note: Refund CO is anonymous. So, be sure to let your supporters know to contact you directly once they donate.
